  • The word “Advent” is derived from the Latin adventus, which means “arrival” or “coming”. In the Christian Church, the season of Advent is a time of preparation and expectation, not just for the remembrance and celebration of the birth of Christ, but also as we look for the second coming of Christ. Like the Israelites in the Old Testament awaiting the Messiah, today’s church awaits Christ’s return.

Many churches participate in lighting Advent candles as part of the liturgy during Christmas. A Liturgy is simply an act of public worship. Taking communion, like we do each week, is a type of liturgical practice.

  • While it is traditional to display the Advent candles in a wreath. Modern displays have become creative and unique. A simple online search for “DIY Advent Wreaths” will reveal displays made from Legos to coffee mugs. Have fun with your display, make it meaningful and unique to your family and home. The most important thing to remember is why we are taking time to slow down, remember and look toward the joy set before us.

In addition to Advent wreaths and candles, many families use calendars or storybooks during this time. Advent calendars can be purchased easily from many sources. One of our favorites is Advent Blocks, which can be used yearly and are perfect for younger children.

For older children (8 and up) the Arnold Ytreeide Advent books are a wonderful option. This set of historical fiction books weave the Christmas Story and the personal journey of 4 children into a suspenseful tale that culminates at the birth of Christ. Each of the main characters lives are intertwined and connected to Jesus. Pick one for this year and then choose another in succession. It doesn’t matter which one is read first but Jotham’s Journey was the first one written.

  • Many local stores carry Advent candles and wreaths but here is one online ordering source.
