A Letter from Pastor Jason
Have you ever learned valuable lessons from watching someone else succeed or fail?
We’ve probably all witnessed others make choices that resulted in positive or negative consequences. We resolve to learn from their mistakes or imitate the steps that led to their success. These are important life lessons that can save us from hurt and heartache. If we pay attention to these moments, we can save ourselves from repeating the same mistakes that lead to hurt and heartache.
The opening chapters of the book of Revelation are just that -- life lessons of what we should and should not do. The Apostle John receives a revelation from Jesus that begins with messages for the seven churches in Asia Minor, an unveiling of the things to come and a glimpse into the future. This vision of another time and place was intended to shape how they were to live their lives. The first three chapters of Revelation contain letters written to the seven primary churches in Asia Minor. Times were not easy for the early disciples as they were faced with intensifying persecution and a dwindling church. John puts on his Pastor’s hat and calls the seven churches to loyalty, endurance and radical discipleship.
If anyone knew about faithfulness under fire, it was John. He was arrested multiple times, flogged, and according to legend, boiled in a vat of oil, yet did not die. Now John is in his 80’s and imprisoned on the island of Patmos, 37 miles off the coast of Greece. Why? For preaching the Word of God and his eyewitness testimony about Jesus. There was no escape for John, yet that did not hinder his conviction and call to faithfulness. His unwavering faith is a testament to the power of Jesus in our lives.
As we delve into in the first three chapters of Revelation, it is not just a history lesson but a guide on how to be a faithful disciple of Jesus, no matter what is happening around us. These lessons are not just valuable, they are life changing. We will see ourselves in these seven churches and the question we’ll face is, “Are we ready to learn the lessons that will transform our lives?”
Get ready to be challenged by the Word of God and called by the Holy Spirit to trust in our King Jesus and live by His Kingdom ways.
